Ratan N. Tata, a prominent Indian business leader and philanthropist, passed away on October 9 in Mumbai at the age of 86. He was an influential figure, known as the largest international donor to Cornell University, where he supported various initiatives including scholarships, research to combat rural poverty, malnutrition, and technology innovation.
As the chairman emeritus of Tata Sons, the holding company for the multinational Tata Group, Tata oversaw significant global expansion of the company during his tenure from 1991 to 2012. Under his leadership, the Tata Group’s revenues surpassed $100 billion, earning a reputation for a strong commitment to public welfare. Following his retirement, Tata chaired the Tata Trusts, which holds a 66% stake in the Tata Group, and also led his own venture capital firm.
In 2017, significant contributions from Tata and his organizations led to the establishment of the Tata Innovation Center at Cornell Tech on Roosevelt Island, New York City. Earlier, in 2008, a $50 million gift from the Tata Trusts established the Tata-Cornell Institute for Agriculture and Nutrition, along with the Tata Scholarship for Indian students.
Cornell leaders recognized Tata’s lasting impact on the university and beyond, highlighting his humility and generosity. Interim President Michael I. Kotlikoff praised Tata’s dedication to improving education and health for millions.
Born in 1937, Tata attended Cornell University and initially pursued mechanical engineering before switching to architecture. Although he never built a career in architecture, he credited his education with influencing his business approach, particularly in creative problem-solving.
His engineering background greatly contributed to Tata Motors introducing the Tata Nano in 2008, which was touted as the world’s most affordable car aimed at enhancing safety for low-income drivers.
Tata’s philanthropy has directly supported numerous international students through the Tata Scholarship Fund, enhancing access to education for talented individuals from various backgrounds.
The Tata-Cornell Institute remains focused on innovative approaches to tackle poverty and enhance nutrition in developing countries, especially in India. It assembles multidisciplinary teams to drive this mission from locations in Ithaca, Mumbai, and New Delhi.
During his time as a trustee and various honorary positions at Cornell, Tata was celebrated as an entrepreneur and philanthropist, receiving numerous accolades, including two of India’s highest civilian awards and recognition from the Rockefeller Foundation. Notably, he was acknowledged as one of the world’s most respected CEOs by Barron’s magazine. Despite his busy professional life, Tata cherished his experiences at Cornell and remained closely connected to the university throughout his life.
