The People’s Alliance General Secretary, Sila Balawa, has praised Manoa Kamikamica’s resignation from his ministerial role, calling it an “honourable act” that restores integrity in public office. Kamikamica stepped down as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade this week after facing serious charges from the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC), including perjury and providing false information to a public servant.
Balawa remarked that Kamikamica’s unexpected resignation is a rare instance of accountability in Fijian politics. He expressed respect for Kamikamica’s decision, stating, “He still remains a Member of Parliament, but stepping down as a Minister means he’s allowing for investigations to proceed unhindered. He has done something that has been missing for decades, doing the right thing.”
Moreover, Balawa emphasized that this decision sets a precedent for other leaders, reminding the public of a time when stepping aside during investigations was commonplace. He noted, “It’s the sign of a good leader, one who is willing to step aside and let things be investigated before moving forward.”
Kamikamica, who is still a Member of Parliament, faces allegations stemming from inquiries related to the contentious appointment of Barbara Malimali as FICAC Commissioner. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has assured party members that Kamikamica will continue to serve as the deputy party leader and remain active in Parliament under the People’s Alliance banner.
This situation reflects an emerging focus on political integrity and accountability in Fiji, with many citizens hoping it could lead to wider reforms within the government. The recent upheaval surrounding Kamikamica’s resignation signals a critical moment in Fiji’s political landscape, suggesting that commitment to transparency and governance improvements may align with the public’s aspirations for a trustworthy political system.
The emphasis on accountability is hopeful as it underscores a collective desire among the Fijian populace for a transparent and stable governance framework that resonates with their expectations for the future of Fiji.
