The Fiji Sugar Corporation (FSC) is making significant strides in repairing and restoring the Rarawai sugar mill, which suffered considerable damage from a fire on September 17. Nitya Reddy, chair of the FSC board of directors, confirmed that preliminary restoration work has commenced, including the procurement of essential materials for repairs. To ensure continuous electricity supply for vital services, three generators have been hired, benefiting around 1,000 members of the local staff community who have faced disruption due to the incident.
Reddy pointed out that the fire resulted in severe damage to critical cable networks, which are not readily available in local stores. To address this challenge, the FSC is collaborating with local manufacturers and considering international options for sourcing the necessary components. Before the fire, the Rarawai mill employed approximately 550 workers, and the FSC is committed to finding alternative roles for these employees. The organization is currently in discussions with union representatives regarding personnel changes between the Rarawai and Lautoka mills to facilitate this transition.
