Rangers Option Struggling Star to Triple-A: Will it Spark a Comeback?

ARLINGTON — In a bid to revitalize the performance of struggling third baseman Josh Jung, the Texas Rangers have decided to option him to Triple-A Round Rock. This decision comes after efforts to implement a mental reset did not yield the desired results.

Jung, who was the team’s first round pick in 2019, has faced significant challenges at the plate. Since June 1, he has registered a dismal batting average of .158 with a slugging percentage that ranks among the lowest in the league. Manager Bruce Bochy acknowledged the ongoing difficulties, stating that while Jung continues to work hard, the team must find ways to improve their offensive output. “We’ve got to find a way to score runs,” he said.

Despite attempts to support his mental game, including a break earlier this month, Jung’s struggles persisted. His tendency to chase high, inside fastballs is a critical issue, as he has the third highest swing rate for such pitches in Major League Baseball this season—up to 59.3% in June alone. This pattern was especially evident during the recent Seattle series, where he managed only two hits in fifteen at-bats and struggled in high-pressure situations.

“It’s been the worst [month] ever,” Jung admitted, citing the ongoing battle with consistency as a source of frustration. He emphasized that he is focused on making necessary adjustments while maintaining his routine.

This move to Triple-A comes at a crucial point in the season, as the Rangers look to boost their chances at scoring runs and sustaining a competitive edge. Given Jung’s established talent and potential, this step back might pave the way for a more impactful return, allowing him to refine his skills away from the pressures of the main roster.

In a positive light, this could serve as an opportunity for Jung to recalibrate his approach, address his weaknesses, and return stronger to the team, demonstrating that every setback can lead to significant growth in a player’s career.
