Rangers Eye Skip Schumaker for 2026 Postseason Push

The Texas Rangers are setting their sights on a postseason return in 2026 following the departure of former manager Bruce Bochy. According to reports, former Miami Marlins manager Skip Schumaker is poised to take the reins as the next manager. Chris Young, the team’s president of baseball operations, has reportedly prioritized Schumaker for the role, as the Rangers currently do not have any external candidates under consideration.

Bob Nightengale from USA Today shared insights via social media, indicating that while Schumaker has not been officially named, it is widely believed that he is the frontrunner for the position. Schumaker, who previously had a playing career largely with the St. Louis Cardinals, transitioned into coaching with various roles including a managerial stint with the Miami Marlins. His journey included a commendable 2023 season where he was named NL Manager of the Year, directing the Marlins back to the playoffs. However, the following year proved challenging, ending with the team in last place in the NL East, leading to his departure amidst personal issues.

With Schumaker set to lead, questions arise regarding whether he can replicate his previous success and help the Rangers return to the postseason. Despite Bochy’s exit, the Rangers are equipped with a solid core of talent, including stars like Corey Seager, Marcus Semien, and Nathan Eovaldi. However, the ongoing dispute related to their television deal may hinder the team’s ability to retain talent and acquire new players.

The expectations are high for Schumaker and Young as they aim to capitalize on the Rangers’ potential. The roster boasts promising young players, yet many have not progressed as anticipated. The challenge will be to not only develop this talent but also to steer the franchise back into competition for October baseball.

All eyes will be on Schumaker as he embarks on this new chapter, with fans hopeful that his leadership can ignite a rebound for the Rangers in the coming seasons.
