The Texas Rangers are welcoming back pitcher Jordan Montgomery with a one-year contract valued at $1.25 million, along with incentives, according to sports reporter Evan Grant. Montgomery’s return comes after he underwent Tommy John surgery, and he is likely to be placed on the 60-day injured list as he continues his recovery.

Montgomery played a pivotal role in the Rangers’ success during the 2023 World Series. He was acquired from the St. Louis Cardinals at the trade deadline in exchange for prospects Tekoah Roby, Thomas Saggese, and John King. He delivered an impressive performance with a 2.79 ERA across 11 regular-season starts and maintained his excellence in the postseason, featuring a 2.90 ERA in six appearances, including important innings in the Rangers’ Game 7 victory in the ALCS.

After the 2023 season, Montgomery entered free agency anticipating a substantial contract. However, he faced a less favorable market, leading him to sign a one-year, $25 million deal with the Arizona Diamondbacks that included a $20 million player option. His 2024 season was challenging, with a 6.23 ERA over 21 starts and four relief outings. Montgomery then spent the entire 2025 season recovering from Tommy John surgery, undergoing the procedure at the end of March that year.

Initially, there were doubts about the Rangers’ decision to bring Montgomery back, especially since he was projected to be out until near the All-Star break, which placed him a month behind teammate Cody Bradford in recovery. However, Rangers general manager Chris Young’s philosophy of securing ample starting pitching has led to a change in perspective. At a cost-effective $1.25 million, Montgomery’s signing is viewed as a prudent move.

The return of Montgomery is particularly significant given the high turnover among the 2023 roster, making his addition a nod to continuity and experience. As one of the most successful trade deadline acquisitions in Rangers history, alongside names like Cliff Lee, Montgomery’s return could foster positive team morale. Fans and analysts alike are now speculating about additional roster movements, such as the potential re-signing of Mitch Garver, who could share designated hitter duties with Joc Pederson.
