Randi Weingarten Explores Why Fascists Fear Teachers in NYC Book Talk

Randi Weingarten, President of the American Federation of Teachers, will host a discussion on her new book, “Why Fascists Fear Teachers: Public Education and the Future of Democracy,” on Monday, November 17, at the ILR Conference Center in New York City, located at 570 Lexington Avenue.

The evening will commence at 6 p.m. with light refreshments and an opportunity for networking. The conversation, moderated by Steven Greenhouse, a former reporter for The New York Times, will start at 6:30 p.m. Following the discussion, Weingarten will sign copies of her book. Admission to this event is free, but registration is required for both in-person and online attendance. The event will also be live-streamed for broader access.

Sally Klingel, executive director of the Scheinman Institute on Conflict Resolution, expressed enthusiasm for Weingarten’s visit, noting her long-standing commitment to the ILR community. Klingel highlighted Weingarten’s contributions to the campus through lectures, mentorship, and teaching, including her recent role as the Alice B. Grant Labor Leader in Residence last spring.

The event is co-sponsored by several organizations, including the Scheinman Institute on Conflict Resolution, the Worker Institute, Labor Leadership Initiatives, and the ILR Alumni Association Labor and Social Justice Council, emphasizing the collective intent to discuss significant issues surrounding public education and democracy.

This engaging gathering promises to provide valuable insights into the intersection of education and democratic principles, encouraging open dialogue at a time when these topics are more relevant than ever.
