The RaNadi Touch Initiative in Nadi is making significant strides toward community transformation by tackling critical social issues through the medium of sports. Spearheaded by the Nadi Touch Rugby Association (NTRA), this innovative program recently hosted a leadership training session aimed at combating gender inequality, youth vulnerability, and social exclusion.
This initiative exemplifies a robust partnership between the private sector, government, and grassroots organizations. It is primarily funded by the Australian Government’s Team Up program and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) through the Play for Equity Fund, garnering substantial sponsorship and support. Notably, the Radisson Blu Resort Fiji has contributed $6,000 in sponsorship and provided exceptional facilities, enhancing the program’s execution in a professional and safe environment.
Facilitated by Leadership Fiji and NTRA, the training sessions feature a culturally relevant curriculum designed to resonate with the local community. Since its launch in late 2025, the RaNadi Training Initiative has concentrated on empowering women who are leaders across various sectors, including business, education, and domestic roles.
By merging leadership development with touch rugby, the initiative moves beyond traditional “stand-alone activity” approaches, thereby nurturing a sustainable network of female leaders capable of driving change in local norms and addressing community challenges such as substance abuse and safety concerns.
The involvement of Radisson Blu signifies a pivotal shift in how the tourism industry engages with communities. Rather than making a one-time donation, the resort’s commitment to the RaNadi Initiative exemplifies a model of shared value creation. By investing in the leadership and well-being of Nadi’s residents, they contribute to building a more resilient and competent local workforce. Early indicators from the program show heightened confidence among participants, improved peer networks, and a noticeable increase in women’s representation in leadership roles both in sports and broader workplaces.
As the initiative transitions into its second phase, it will emphasize long-term mentoring and support, further positioning Nadi as a model for similar projects throughout the Pacific. This program demonstrates that sports can be a powerful and inclusive tool for advancing gender equity and fostering community resilience. The RaNadi Touch Initiative serves as a beacon of hope, illustrating how collaborative efforts can generate meaningful change and empowerment across the region.
