Ramy Youssef, the cocreator and lead actor of the hit series Ramy, equates guest-directing on television to being a surrogate parent. When taking on the role of an outside director for a single episode of a show, it’s essential to align with the established style and atmosphere, making the experience less about personal creativity and more about fitting into someone else’s vision. Youssef recognizes this challenge.

However, his directorial experience on the season two episode “Honeydew” of The Bear was markedly different. This particular episode, focusing on Marcus, portrayed by Lionel Boyce, as he travels to Copenhagen to seek inspiration for a dessert menu, stands out from the series’ usual high-energy pace. Youssef embraced the opportunity to infuse a unique tone and atmosphere into the episode that complements Marcus’s character.

Youssef expressed appreciation for the culinary world, revealing how he discovered the process individuals undergo to find their creative voice. Marcus’s journey becomes a quest for self-discovery, departing from familial responsibilities and exploring the serene environment of Copenhagen. Youssef believes the city’s tranquil ambiance provided a blank slate for Marcus to explore his identity.

This project gave Youssef a break from his multiple roles on Ramy, allowing him to focus solely on directing. He recently shared some of the photographs he captured during his two-week preparation in Copenhagen, highlighting how the experience influenced him.

When asked about how Copenhagen’s mood and aesthetic impacted Marcus’s story, Youssef emphasized the significance of the surroundings on the creative process. He noted that the colors and scenery that Marcus experiences directly inspire the dishes he creates, deepening the connection between the character’s journey and the culinary artistry.

Regarding the choice of a houseboat for Marcus’s stay in Copenhagen, Youssef explained that it stemmed from a past conversation with the line producer. This echoed their experience filming on a houseboat in Cairo for Ramy. The houseboat setting fosters a sense of intimacy and privacy, encapsulating a fine balance between feeling lonely and experiencing tranquility. It symbolizes the idea of being both untethered and liberated.

Youssef elaborated on the significance of Marcus returning home with newfound insights and personal growth, portraying a transformative journey sparked by his time in Copenhagen.
