The Ministry of Workplace Relations, through the National Occupational Health and Safety Service (NOHSS), has taken proactive measures following an investigation into a concerning incident at Rampur College. Last Friday, two students fell into a septic tank while using a prohibited shortcut between the washroom and the canteen, stepping onto a concrete cover that collapsed unexpectedly.

Employment Minister Agni Deo Singh reported that although both students were quickly rescued by a peer and did not suffer any injuries, the investigation raised significant concerns regarding the structural integrity of the septic tank’s cover. In response, the NOHSS has issued a Requisition Notice to the school, demanding essential occupational health and safety documentation. This includes the school’s Occupational Health and Safety Policy, an internal report on the incident, and an updated map that highlights restricted areas on the campus.

Additionally, an Improvement Notice has been served, mandating immediate action to install proper barricades around the compromised area and conduct necessary repairs to the septic tank by the following Friday. Singh emphasized that the issuance of these notices underscores the government’s commitment to ensuring that all workplaces, especially educational institutions, adhere to safety standards.

To further enhance safety, the NOHSS has recommended several preventive measures. These include clearer warning signage for restricted zones, increasing student awareness of designated pathways during breaks, and enhancing staff supervision in areas that are less visible and potentially hazardous.

The Ministry remains dedicated to collaborating with the Ministry of Education and school Occupational Health and Safety Committees to foster compliance and ensure safe learning environments across the country. These actions not only address immediate safety concerns but also pave the way for a more secure and aware school culture for all students.
