Jose Ramirez, the Cleveland Guardians’ standout third baseman, has chosen to miss this year’s All-Star Game to prioritize his recovery from a right ankle and heel injury sustained during a match against the Toronto Blue Jays on May 2. Originally slated to participate in his seventh All-Star Game on July 15 in Atlanta, the fan-selected starter will instead focus on regaining his health. Isaac Paredes from the Houston Astros will take his place.
Ramirez’s injury occurred when he dove for an infield single, inadvertently colliding with a throw from the pitcher, leading to a rough landing. Despite the setback, he managed to return to action a couple of days later but has faced further challenges this season, including being hit by a fastball from Kevin Gausman in June, which triggered an 0-for-20 slump.
Despite these struggles, Ramirez has shown resilience, currently maintaining a .299 batting average with 16 home runs, 44 runs batted in, and an impressive 24 stolen bases in 29 attempts. He expressed gratitude for the fan support that earned him another All-Star nod, acknowledging that he hasn’t felt at his best this season, potentially due to his ankle issues. With the opportunity to rest, he can focus on rehabilitation without the pressures of game play during the All-Star festivities.
In addition to Ramirez’s situation, the Guardians have also re-signed left-handed pitcher Kolby Allard, who had previously been designated for assignment. Allard, who has showcased versatility in his role—boasting a 2.55 ERA in 16 games—will provide valuable depth as he rejoins the team in Houston, possibly making an impact in the near future.
This focus on recovery for Ramirez and the addition of Allard could prove beneficial for the Guardians in the second half of the season as they aim to improve their competitive standing. The team’s commitment to ensuring player health reflects a long-term strategic approach that fans can hope will pay off as the season progresses.
