Rakiraki’s Community Road Care Initiative Empowers Villagers to Maintain Roads

The Vegetation Control Works Initiative has officially commenced along the Volivoli Circular Road in Rakiraki, marking a significant step in empowering local communities to take an active role in maintaining the roads they rely on daily. The Fiji Roads Authority (FRA) is spearheading this initiative, which allows villagers to manage tasks related to vegetation control and perform minor repairs while earning an income for their efforts.

The FRA emphasizes that before taking on these responsibilities, participants undergo comprehensive training that covers essential areas such as traffic safety, the correct use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), and first aid. These training sessions feature both theoretical knowledge and hands-on practice, ensuring that all participants are well-equipped to perform their duties safely and effectively.

With 32 community groups now engaged in the initiative across the Central, Eastern, Northern, and Western divisions, the program not only enhances local infrastructure but also provides income opportunities for residents. The initiative aligns with broader efforts discussed in previous reports about decentralizing road management and enhancing community involvement in infrastructure maintenance throughout Fiji.

The positive impact of such programs is evident, as seen in other recent initiatives by the FRA aimed at improving accessibility and road conditions in various regions across the country. Similar efforts, such as the maintenance transitions and development projects, indicate a hopeful trend toward fostering community ownership of road safety and cleanliness.

By leveraging local participation in road management, there is optimism that this approach will not only improve road conditions but also cultivate a stronger sense of community responsibility and stewardship, ultimately leading to safer and more connected neighborhoods.
