Opposition Member of Parliament Praveen Bala has sharply criticized the government for failing to deliver on its promise to construct a new sugar mill in Rakiraki, asserting that this unmet commitment has severely impacted local farmers and the community. During a recent parliamentary debate concerning a government guarantee for the Fiji Sugar Corporation (FSC), Bala emphasized that the absence of the new mill has resulted in significant challenges for farmers, who are forced to endure extensive transportation times for their sugarcane. Many drivers from areas such as Rakiraki, Ba, and Tavua are facing waits of two to three days at the Lautoka Mill to offload their produce.
“The promise of a new mill for Rakiraki—where is it? Its continued absence is a betrayal,” Bala remarked, illustrating the frustrations experienced by truck drivers who often end up spending nights at the mill due to extensive delays.
Bala highlighted the central role of the FSC in providing economic support to Rakiraki and surrounding towns. He pointed out, “For Tavua, we may mention Fiji Water, but the rest of us are still fully tied to the sugar industry.” Despite his criticisms, Bala confirmed the Opposition’s conditional support for the government guarantee, indicating it was driven by the urgent needs of struggling farmers and mill workers in these regions.
He called on the government to act swiftly and prioritize the essential infrastructure commitments that are vital for the survival of rural economies. “This is not just about machinery; it’s about livelihoods, dignity, and the survival of Rakiraki’s economy,” he added.
Bala’s concerns echo previous remarks made by the Deputy Leader of the Opposition, Parveen Kumar, who has also condemned the government for failing to deliver on the new mill proposal made during the 2022 elections. Kumar has characterized the government’s promises as misleading political rhetoric that deepens farmers’ mistrust.
The ongoing dialogue regarding the necessity for new infrastructure within the sugar industry reflects a growing frustration among farmers due to frequent breakdowns and delays at existing mills, which compromise their productivity and economic viability. Stakeholders are continuing to push for a modern sugar mill in Viti Levu, viewing it as a crucial step toward revitalizing the beleaguered sugar industry and ensuring a sustainable future for farmers in the region.
Despite the challenges faced, there remains an optimistic perspective among community members who believe that with appropriate infrastructure and support, Rakiraki’s sugar industry can not only endure but also thrive, restoring livelihoods and economic stability in the area.
