Every sunrise brings a new set of challenges, but for Akosita Lomawai, the determination to support her family and chase her aspirations drives her forward. Known for her reliability among vendors and customers at the Raiwaqa market, Akosita is always ready to assist with food needs, whether for special occasions or everyday meals.
Her journey is underpinned by a strong sense of love and responsibility. “I find peace in my market work. Many people come to buy from me, and on a good day, I can earn around $350,” she shared. With a rigorous routine, Akosita wakes up early to buy produce directly from farmers, ensuring her stall is ready for customers by 9 a.m. She proudly offers a variety of fruits and vegetables, including bananas, plantains, and local leafy greens.
Akosita, originally from Cicia in Lau, has one biological daughter in Year 2 and is also caring for three other children. Her earnings support not only her family but also community obligations. She is a forward-thinker who balances immediate needs with future planning, setting aside savings for unforeseen circumstances. “Everything from our market earnings goes towards family, church, and village obligations,” she added.
Her aspirations extend beyond the market. Akosita is pursuing a diploma in business at Fiji National University after completing her first year of studies. She aims to inspire other women in Fiji by emphasizing their essential roles in supporting families and the community.
Akosita embodies the strength and resilience that many Fijian women possess, proving that even small beginnings in a market can lead to significant outcomes. Her story of perseverance inspires others to pursue their dreams while serving their communities, highlighting the impact of dedication and hard work. As she continues her journey, Akosita not only uplifts her family but also encourages a collective spirit of hope and empowerment among her peers.
