The Raiwaqa Flyers touch rugby team recently made history by participating in the Queensland State Cup competition in Brisbane, Australia, becoming the first Fijian club to receive an invitation to this esteemed tournament, which featured over 40 teams from across the country.
The Flyers, consisting of players aged 16 to 20 years, took advantage of this unique opportunity to engage with the rugby community. Jalesi Young, president of Touch Federation Fiji, emphasized the significant learning experience the tournament provided for the young athletes. “The QLD State Cup was a memorable and exceptional competition of learning for our boys,” Young remarked. He pointed out that the event not only helped the players forge new friendships but also offered crucial life lessons that contribute to their development both on and off the field.
With a firm commitment to empowering youth through touch rugby, the Touch Federation Fiji is proactive in creating avenues for personal growth through its holistic development program. This initiative aims to positively transform the lives of young individuals, equipping them with essential skills for their overall well-being.
During the competition, the Raiwaqa Flyers played a total of seven matches, securing three victories while facing four defeats. Their spirited performance, especially in the competitive Open side division, showcased their potential. The team learned valuable lessons surrounding discipline and the importance of honing the fundamental skills required for the sport.
Their heartfelt gratitude extends to QLD Touch Football and the QUNCC committee for the invitation, as well as to WYAM Gold Coast and the Ofa Tukuna family for their generous hospitality, alongside the supportive Fijian community in Gold Coast and Brisbane. This remarkable experience not only enhanced their skills but also created cherished memories that the players will carry forward in their rugby careers. The Flyers’ participation in this prestigious tournament stands as a beacon of hope and inspiration for future Fijian rugby talent.
