The Raiwaqa Navua Crematorium Committee has expressed significant alarm over persistent vandalism and disorderly conduct at the Raiwaqa Cemetery, which serves as a communal resting place for Christians, Muslims, and Hindus. Chaitanya Lakshman, a founding member of the committee, raised his concerns during a public submission to the Standing Committee on Justice, Law and Human Rights. He noted that the cemetery has increasingly become a late-night gathering spot for individuals consuming alcohol, akin to a nightclub atmosphere.
Lakshman emphasized the seriousness of the situation, stating, “There is a huge problem we are facing at Raiwaqa Cemetery. Every weekend, or during any free time, our crematorium and cemetery turn into a nightclub,” which he denounced as disrespectful to the sanctity of the site and the deceased.
To combat the ongoing issues of vandalism and public disorder, Lakshman is advocating for amendments to the Burial and Cremation (Amendment) Bill 2025. He suggested incorporating stronger legal provisions to address trespassing, vandalism, and the desecration of burial sites. He proposed the need for specific legal consequences for individuals found in violation of such provisions, urging that those without lawful excuse be charged appropriately.
Moreover, he highlighted the importance of considering rehabilitation-focused penalties instead of prison sentences for offenders of this nature. This approach aligns with broader efforts within Fiji, where recent discussions have also pointed to the need for updated regulations governing burial practices and the sanctity of cemeteries.
