Hundreds of spirited attendees defied the rain to enjoy the Wanfire concert at Buckhurst Park in Suva on a recent Saturday night. Although the weather was less than ideal, it failed to dampen the enthusiasm of concert-goers who donned raincoats, clutched umbrellas, and even embraced dancing in the rain to enjoy the music. The event featured an array of performances from local and regional artists and culminated in a memorable performance by Australian–New Zealand singer and actor Stan Walker.
Stan Walker expressed his gratitude and admiration for the evening, remarking, “It’s been a long time coming. To be here in Fiji, to sing with you all in the rain, and to feel this love, I’ll never forget it. Music brings us together, no matter the weather, no matter where we come from. Tonight, you showed the world what Fiji is all about.” In a touching tribute, Walker dedicated his final performances to the late George ‘Fiji’ Veikoso, a beloved musician who had significantly impacted him.
The concert proved to be more than just an entertainment event; it also benefitted local small businesses. Numerous food vendors set up stalls, many of whom experienced such an event’s scale for the first time. Feedback from these vendors was positive, with many expressing satisfaction over the sales and experience.
Despite the rain, the success of the event has sparked questions about the possibility of Wanfire returning next year. The concert’s success aligns with prior efforts within Fiji’s music scene to celebrate and promote local cultural talent and enhance the economy through live music events, similar to other substantial gatherings like the George ‘Fiji’ Veikoso Homecoming concert and the Heineken Wan Fire Music Festival, which have attracted significant local and international attention.
These events highlight Fiji’s growing stature as a vibrant hub for music and cultural events, offering opportunities for tourism while showcasing the nation’s rich cultural heritage. Fiji’s ability to host world-class events is contributing positively to the country’s reputation as a destination for exquisite cultural and entertainment experiences.
