Despite the pouring rain in Nausori, the enthusiasm of the Rewa and Labasa teams remained unshaken during the opening round of the Pillay Garments Champion v Champion tournament at Ratu Cakobau Park. Rewa emerged victorious with a narrow 1-0 win, courtesy of a goal by Mosese Nabose just seven minutes into the match.
Rewa’s coach, Priyant Mannu, expressed pride in his team’s performance, particularly given the absence of several key players. “It’s a great start,” Mannu noted, emphasizing how the remaining players rose to the occasion. “Coming into this tournament, we were without so many players, but the boys stepped up when needed, and a first win is important for us.”
The Delta Tigers’ victory was celebrated by over 1,000 spectators, who braved the rain and took shelter further up the grandstand. Mannu’s focus is now on the upcoming match as the team heads north for their next challenge.
On the other side, Labasa’s coach, Alvin Chand, acknowledged the effort of his team despite the loss. The situation was made more challenging when Iowane Matanisiga received a red card in the second half, leaving Labasa with ten players. “I’d like to thank my boys; we did really well. Even though we lost, and even with 10 men, we maintained the composure in our defensive state,” Chand remarked. However, he recognized the critical importance of scoring in football, reflecting on Rewa’s lone goal as the defining moment of the match.
Chand remains optimistic despite the setback, emphasizing the tournament’s two-leg format which allows his team a chance to regroup. “We have one whole week to prepare and have now seen what are the areas of improvement,” he stated, assuring Labasa fans that they would deliver an impressive performance in the upcoming match.
As anticipation builds for the second round, which will take place at Subrail Park in Labasa this weekend, an increase in attendance is expected. The excitement from the opening match and the competitive spirit between the teams sets a promising tone for the remainder of the tournament.
