The opening round of the Pillay Garments Champion v Champion tournament at Ratu Cakobau Park showcased a thrilling match between Rewa and Labasa, despite the torrential rain. Rewa secured a narrow 1-0 victory, thanks to an early goal by Mosese Nabose just seven minutes into the game.

Rewa’s coach, Priyant Mannu, expressed his pride in the team’s performance, particularly in light of their depleted roster with several key players absent. “It’s a great start,” Mannu remarked, highlighting how the remaining squad members rose to the challenge. He emphasized the importance of this victory as a strong foundation for the tournament ahead.

The match drew over 1,000 enthusiastic spectators, who braved the wet conditions to support the Delta Tigers. As Rewa looks forward to their next challenge, they will head north for an anticipated rematch.

Labasa’s coach, Alvin Chand, while disappointed with the result, praised his team’s determination. The situation became more difficult when Iowane Matanisiga received a red card in the second half, leaving Labasa down to ten players. “I’d like to thank my boys; we did really well. Even though we lost, and even with 10 men, we maintained composure in our defensive state,” Chand noted, reflecting on how crucial scoring is in football, as Rewa’s single goal ultimately decided the match.

Chand remains hopeful and optimistic, aware of the tournament’s two-leg format that grants his team a chance to rebound. “We have one whole week to prepare and now have seen areas for improvement,” he assured Labasa supporters, promising an impressive performance in their next game.

As the anticipation builds for the second round scheduled to take place at Subrail Park in Labasa this weekend, a larger crowd is expected. The excitement generated from the first match and the competitive spirit of both teams are setting a promising atmosphere for the rest of the tournament, highlighting the resilience and passion of local football.
