In 2001, National Youth Day celebrations in Lautoka were abruptly called off due to heavy rain that hit the region early that morning. Reports highlighted that the downpour forced organizers to cancel several planned activities, including a 9 am reconciliation march through the city and the main program, which was set to commence at 9:30 am at Narara Park. The then Commissioner Western, Rupeni Nacewa, was expected to serve as the chief guest for the festivities.
Students who journeyed from the interiors of Ba and Nadi to participate in an oratory contest faced disappointment as they returned home without the opportunity to engage in the planned events. A member of the organizing committee conveyed that the cancellation was a necessary decision forced by the inclement weather. He noted that some participants and students were informed of the cancellation only after arriving at Narara Park.
In addition to Lautoka, other districts within the Western Division also experienced heavy rainfall that morning. The Nadi Weather Office had forecasted cloudy conditions to persist over the weekend, primarily affecting the western parts of the country. Weather forecasters attributed the widespread cloud and rain to a trough of low pressure in the region, indicating that afternoon showers could continue as long as the system remained near Fiji.
Meanwhile, while many carried on with their National Youth Day observances indoors, youths in Suvavou Village opted for a more proactive approach by engaging in a clean-up activity. This initiative, organized in anticipation of an upcoming beach volleyball tournament, saw approximately 100 local youths come together to clean the beachfront and nearby areas. The clean-up effort was coordinated by Mosese Tuilau, who expressed pride in the community’s involvement.
Additionally, another clean-up initiative took place at the Korovou Prison compound, led by Sergeant Joeli Lau, in collaboration with Operation Sasamaki. These activities not only reflect a commitment to community betterment but also showcase the resilience and spirit of youth engagement despite the challenges posed by the weather. Through such efforts, the younger generation is illustrating their dedication to serving their communities and taking initiative.
