Raiders Legend George Atkinson Dies: Soul Patrol Legacy Lives On

George Atkinson, a beloved figure in Raiders history and a key member of the team’s famed “Soul Patrol” secondary, has passed away at the age of 78. A seventh-round draft pick out of Morris Brown, Atkinson played for the Raiders from 1968 to 1977 before finishing his NFL career with the Denver Broncos in 1979. Through his remarkable career, he amassed 30 interceptions over the course of 138 games, solidifying his reputation as a tough and hard-hitting safety.

The Raiders organization expressed deep sorrow over Atkinson’s passing, acknowledging his significant contributions both on and off the field. In a heartfelt statement, the team remarked, “The Raiders family is deeply saddened by the passing of George Atkinson, a lifelong Raider whose physical style of play helped define an era of football.” His legacy includes being an integral part of the team’s long run of success during the 1970s, which included reaching five consecutive AFC Championship games and winning Super Bowl 11.

Not only did Atkinson excel as a player, but he also remained a long-term presence within the Raiders community as a broadcaster and evaluator, earning respect and admiration from players and fans alike. Raiders owner Mark Davis, a close friend of Atkinson, reflected on the lasting impact Atkinson had on the organization, stating that his “genuine personality and wonderful sense of humor will be dearly missed by everyone who knew him.”

This marks a period of mourning for the Raiders, as Atkinson’s death follows just four days after the passing of Carol Davis, the mother of Mark Davis and widow of team founder Al Davis.
