Radike Nawalu, a notable figure in the history of Fijian soccer, is transitioning to a new role at Tambua Sands Resort, marking a significant chapter in his life following his retirement from professional sports. Grateful for this opportunity to remain active in the workforce, Nawalu expressed his heartfelt thanks in a statement released by the resort.
“First and foremost, I thank God,” Nawalu conveyed, showing appreciation for the management of Tambua Sands for allowing him to be part of the team despite his retirement. His current responsibilities include working in the landscapes department and serving as a resort driver.
Although he still practices his soccer skills occasionally, Nawalu acknowledges the evolution of the game since his prime playing days. Resort manager Angela Bob commended Nawalu’s work ethic and vibrant personality, noting, “Radike is a fantastic worker, but what really stands out is his humour and fluency in Hindi, which brightens everyone’s day. We’re proud to have him on our team.” She further emphasized the commitment of Warwick Resorts to honoring all staff members, including those who are retired yet still keen to contribute.
Often referred to as Dixie in the Fijian soccer community, Nawalu is celebrated as one of the greatest strikers in Fiji’s sports history. His illustrious career spanned from the mid-1980s to the early 1990s, during which he played for prominent teams like Nadroga and Suva. Notably, he represented the national team in significant events, including the 1992 World Cup qualifier against New Zealand.
Nawalu’s journey exemplifies how passion, experience, and commitment can continue to create a positive impact long after an athletic career concludes. In embracing this new role at the resort, he serves as an inspiring figure, demonstrating that retirement can also usher in fresh opportunities and a continued dedication to serving the community.
