Purcell, Oklahoma witnessed the impact of a radar-confirmed tornado on Thursday morning as it tore across Interstate 35 and parts of the city, coinciding with a severe line of thunderstorms sweeping through the Southern Plains. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported, though western areas of Purcell suffered significant damage, according to local police.

In the wake of the storm, police reported downed light and power poles around 7:30 a.m. local time, leading to power outages and gas leaks. The winds proved strong enough to flip a semi-truck along I-35, showcasing the storm’s ferocity. The City of Stillwater extended mutual aid to Purcell in response to the emergency.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) indicated a Level 2 out of 5 risk for severe thunderstorms, with further tornado threats looming across regions from Oklahoma City to Tulsa. As the situation unfolded, storm trackers captured footage showing debris, including tree limbs, scattered across homes.

A Tornado Watch remains active for portions of Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Missouri until noon CT, signaling ongoing vigilance in these areas. Severe weather conditions are expected to persist throughout Thursday, particularly across the Mississippi River Valley, extending from St. Louis to Oklahoma City, and down to Monroe, Louisiana. This severe weather is being fueled by a cold front associated with a powerful storm system traveling across the country, poised to bring rain to millions in the Plains, Mississippi Valley, and Midwest regions.
