Opposition MP Premila Kumar has taken aim at Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka for his slow response in dismissing Minister for Youth and Sports Jese Saukuru amidst serious allegations tied to the Fiji Sports Council. The Prime Minister recently announced his decision to relieve Saukuru of his duties, citing urgent concerns over the misuse of public office. This action aims to allow an independent investigation by the Fiji Police Force to thoroughly examine the allegations surrounding the minister’s conduct.
Emphasizing the necessity of integrity in public service and the proper management of public resources, Rabuka pointed out that adherence to these principles is expected from all government officials. However, Kumar contends that this intervention comes too late, as an independent inquiry by the Fiji Sports Council is already underway.
“Prime Minister Rabuka, your action comes rather late. The independent investigation by the Fiji Sports Council, which is already progressing, will reveal the conduct of Minister Jese Saukuru,” Kumar stated. She further criticized the Prime Minister for seemingly taking control of the Youth and Sports portfolio more to mitigate damage than to showcase decisive leadership.
