Understanding Fiji’s maritime boundaries and the critical role of fishing within designated zones is vital for all boat operators to comply with fisheries laws and ensure safety at sea. This point was strongly emphasized by Captain Charles Pickering of the Pacific Center for Maritime Studies during the inauguration of a two-month Boat Master Class 6 training program in Labasa, which attracted 45 participants from Vanua Levu.

The training encompasses essential topics, including proper fish handling techniques from catch to storage. This initiative is designed to arm maritime communities with practical skills that promote safety, sustainability, and productivity in fishing practices. According to Captain Pickering, the program will significantly aid participants in deepening their understanding of maritime zones and navigation limits.

“They have had limited training in this area, so this provides them with opportunities to gain more knowledge and learn different fishing techniques through formal schooling. Not only within the three nautical mile limit but also beyond it. After they graduate, they will be qualified to operate vessels up to 15 meters in length and less than 20 gross tonnage,” he stated.

Trainer Mikaele Labalaba also stressed the importance of grasping maritime laws and safe fishing management practices for small-scale fishers, pointing out that this knowledge is crucial for effectively navigating interactions with larger vessels. “This training allows them to understand basic maritime laws, including which vessel should give way when a larger ship is approaching,” he remarked.

This initiative marks a historic first for Class 6 license training being offered at the community level in Fiji, signaling a significant step forward in local maritime education. Additionally, there are plans to extend similar training initiatives to the Western and Central Divisions later this year, ensuring a broader reach of marine safety and fisheries management education throughout the nation.

Ultimately, this training not only serves as a guide for compliance and safety but also paves the way for improved livelihoods for Fiji’s fishing communities, cultivating a sustainable approach to managing their abundant maritime resources. This initiative is a hopeful stride towards building a knowledgeable and skilled workforce that can safeguard Fiji’s rich marine environment.
