Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has urged Fijians living abroad to embrace and uphold the core values that define their nation—respect, humility, and compassion. He made these remarks while joining thousands in Sydney to commemorate Fiji’s 55th Independence Day.
The celebration took place at Liverpool’s Woodward Park, which was filled with vibrant displays of blue and white as members of the Fijian diaspora proudly waved their national flags. The event was not only a celebration of national pride but also an expression of the unity and warmth that characterize the Fijian spirit.
As a special guest at the event, Prime Minister Rabuka expressed gratitude to the Fijian community in Australia for their continued support. He remarked, “Even though you are far from Fiji, your hearts remain close,” acknowledging their contributions to the nation through remittances, family ties, and unwavering prayers. The Prime Minister highlighted the impressive $448.5 million sent back home during the first four months of the year, which plays a crucial role in sustaining families and communities across the islands.
“Your contributions have lifted the lives of so many people back home,” Rabuka said, reinforcing the impact of the diaspora on the nation’s economy and wellbeing. He encouraged Fijians living overseas to be proud of their heritage, emphasizing that they should embody the best aspects of Fiji in their daily lives.
Furthermore, the Prime Minister took the opportunity to thank the Australian government and its people for their enduring friendship through the Vuvale Partnership, describing Australia as “a true friend to Fiji.” This relationship is pivotal, contributing to the strengthening of ties between the two nations and fostering mutual respect and cooperation.
The 55th Independence Day celebration in Sydney showcased a profound sense of community and connection among Fijians abroad, reflecting their commitment to fostering a sense of belonging and support for their homeland. As Fiji continues on its path of progress, this diaspora’s role is increasingly recognized as vital to the country’s future and development.
In these uncertain times, the call for unity and the celebration of cultural values serve to remind Fijians, both at home and abroad, of the strength and resilience they embody together.
