Rabuka Presides as Pacific Officials Rally for Accountable Governance

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka reaffirmed the crucial role of government secretaries during a welcoming dinner for the Pacific Heads of Prime Ministers’ Departments held at the Grand Pacific Hotel in Suva. Addressing senior officials from various Pacific Island countries, he underscored their responsibilities as principal advisers to heads of state and stressed their importance in aligning public policies with the realities faced by citizens.

The event aimed at promoting regional cooperation and unity brought together officials committed to enhancing governance, implementing regional priorities, and fostering mentorship and capacity building. Prime Minister Rabuka noted the essential role these senior officials play in coordinating policy formulation and ensuring effective delivery, which directly affects the quality of life for Pacific Islanders.

Highlighting the increasing public demand for accountability, transparency, and responsiveness from leaders, Rabuka stated, “The lessons we have learned are not just for us; they are meant to be shared.” He reiterated Fiji’s dedication to a rule-based international order and the importance of multilateral cooperation between Pacific nations, emphasizing that, despite their small size, their collective faith and determination are their greatest assets.

Rabuka also spotlighted the significance of the “Ocean of Peace Declaration,” which embodies the shared values of the Pacific nations. He urged delegates to engage in meaningful discussions that lead to tangible outcomes for the region, reminding them that their roles are vital in shaping a cohesive and resilient future.

Following the dinner, the officials participated in closed-door meetings to further their discussions on governance roles.
