Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has urged Sports Minister Jese Saukuru to consider stepping aside as investigations into the Fiji Sports Council travel controversy continue. This issue surfaced from allegations concerning a contra agreement with Fiji Airways that facilitated travel for Saukuru’s wife to New Zealand.

In his recent statements, Rabuka confirmed that he had already advised Saukuru not to interfere with the investigation currently underway. He referenced the proactive example set by Home Affairs Minister Pio Tikoduadua, who voluntarily stepped back from his responsibilities last year amid a different investigation, encouraging Saukuru to reflect on this precedent.

When questioned about whether he was formally recommending that Saukuru take similar action, the Prime Minister suggested that it might be a prudent choice, stating, “Well, as a mature Member of Parliament, having been in now, going into his second term, hopefully he will realize that that might be the better option for all of us.” However, Rabuka stopped short of giving a direct instruction for Saukuru to resign.

In response to the investigation, Saukuru has publicly confirmed his use of the contra arrangement and has expressed his readiness to repay the amount owed. This move towards accountability could play a crucial role in restoring public trust as the situation unfolds. The developments are being closely monitored both within the sports sector and the political landscape of Fiji, highlighting the significance of integrity and transparency in government operations.
