Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has expressed strong confidence in the stability of his Coalition Government, even as it faces serious challenges from legal issues affecting two of his Deputy Prime Ministers. In a recent statement to The Fiji Times from his home in Suva, Rabuka confirmed that Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, National Planning and Statistics, Professor Biman Prasad, has been charged by the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) for failing to meet statutory disclosure requirements and allegedly providing false information in a statutory declaration under the Political Parties Act.
Prasad has indicated his intention to resign following the summons. Rabuka expressed concern over the potential impact of these developments on government performance, particularly as they approach the end of their third year in office. However, he emphasized that the charges against Prasad are based on events prior to his administration’s tenure, suggesting that they should not obstruct the Coalition’s ongoing work.
In light of the situation, the Prime Minister plans to appoint a seasoned individual to the Finance, National Planning and Statistics portfolio to ensure continuity within the government. He firmly dismissed assertions that these legal troubles would erode public trust in the Coalition, asserting, “I am confident of my team. We will come through this. We will probably come through with our heads high.” Rabuka is dedicated to achieving a strong performance ahead of the 2026 elections and remains optimistic about the government’s future.
Simultaneously, both former Deputy Prime Minister Manoa Kamikamica and Prasad have committed to continuing their political support as they navigate their respective legal challenges. Prasad’s case is scheduled for a hearing on November 17, and Rabuka assured that he would adhere to established protocols should further actions be necessary.
This moment represents a crucial juncture for Rabuka’s administration, showcasing the resilience and determination of political leadership in the face of adversity. The Prime Minister’s focus on governance, despite the challenges, highlights the Coalition’s commitment to stability and progress moving forward.
