Fiji’s Rabuka Unveils Ocean of Peace at UN General Assembly, Urging Pacific Unity

Rabuka Champions Pacific Ocean of Peace at UN General Assembly

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka is in New York, championing the Pacific’s “Ocean of Peace” initiative at the 80th United Nations General Assembly. This year’s session is pivotal for Fiji and the broader Pacific as they continue to advocate for peace and unity, emphasizing the importance of recognizing the region as a zone free from rivalry, through a commitment to oceanic stewardship. The initiative, initially outlined in 2023 at the UNGA, underscores Fiji’s role in advocating for peace, environmental responsibility, and sustainable development. Rabuka aims to emphasize Fiji’s dedication to these principles while addressing critical issues like climate change, security, and migration. His agenda includes crucial bilateral engagements and participations in international roundtable discussions, highlighting the significant impact of small island nations in global decision-making, especially concerning security and climate action amidst rising instability.

Accompanied by Environment Minister Mosese Bulitavu and Health Minister Ratu Atonio Lalabalavu, Rabuka’s delegation signifies a united front in addressing key global issues. The UNGA80 general debate, from September 23 to 29, showcases ongoing efforts towards global peace and security. This visit aligns with Fiji’s strategic momentum, following the announcement of the “Ocean for Peace” policy during the 53rd Pacific Islands Leaders Meeting in Tonga. The partnership between the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat and the Fijian government highlights a collaborative regional approach to fostering peace and security.

Rabuka’s active involvement in these international discussions illustrates the crucial role of Pacific nations in contributing to the global community. This initiative offers a beacon of optimism and cooperation in addressing the world’s pressing challenges, reinforcing the Pacific’s vital contribution to global stability and peace.
