For years, residents of Ra have faced the challenging task of traveling long distances during emotionally trying times to safely lay their loved ones to rest. However, this burden is set to be alleviated as the Minister for Health, Dr. Ratu Atonio Lalabalavu, announced that a new mortuary is nearing its final approval stages.
This initiative, championed by the Ra Chamber of Commerce and backed by local community efforts, is viewed as a vital support system for families that have endured these hardships in silence for far too long. Dr. Ratu Atonio emphasized the project’s importance, stating, “For many years, families in Ra have had to travel long distances just to access mortuary services, and this project directly addresses those hardships.”
The mortuary, estimated to cost $250,000, is designed to accommodate 18 bodies and aims to provide dignity and comfort to grieving families. It will include modern refrigeration, proper sanitation facilities, and a dedicated viewing room—essential amenities that many in Ra have awaited for decades.
Currently, the agreement with the Ra Chamber of Commerce is under review at the Solicitor-General’s Office, a significant milestone in advancing this project. The initiative reflects the resilience and cooperation of the Ra community, which includes local businesses, diaspora, and everyday families who have actively fundraised and contributed to this cause.
Once operational, the Ra Chamber of Commerce will take charge of funding, servicing, and maintaining the mortuary for a period of 15 years, while the Ministry of Health will provide necessary staff and utilities. “The Ra Chamber of Commerce will fully fund and maintain the facility for 15 years after it opens, showing the strength of community partnership,” said Dr. Ratu Atonio.
The facility is anticipated to be completed by February 2026, enhancing Ra’s disaster preparedness and allowing families to bid farewell to their loved ones with the dignity they deserve. Minister Ratu Atonio assured Parliament that this project transcends mere infrastructure; it represents a commitment to restoring dignity, alleviating hardship, and honoring the people of Ra during their most vulnerable moments.
