Residents of Ra have faced significant challenges when it comes to laying their loved ones to rest, often enduring long journeys to access mortuary services during highly emotional times. However, relief is on the horizon as Minister for Health, Dr. Ratu Atonio Lalabalavu, announced that a new mortuary is close to receiving final approval.
This crucial initiative, supported by the Ra Chamber of Commerce and local community efforts, aims to provide much-needed support to families who have long suffered in silence. “For many years, families in Ra have had to travel long distances just to access mortuary services, and this project directly addresses those hardships,” stated Dr. Ratu Atonio.
The planned mortuary, with an estimated budget of $250,000, will have the capacity to accommodate 18 bodies, offering essential amenities including modern refrigeration, sanitation facilities, and a dedicated viewing room. These facilities are anticipated with hope and relief by the grieving families of Ra.
Currently, the agreement between the Ra Chamber of Commerce and the government is being reviewed by the Solicitor-General’s Office, marking a critical step forward in realizing this project. This initiative also reflects the strength and collaboration of the Ra community, which includes contributions from local businesses and families who have rallied together to fundraise for this cause.
Once the mortuary is operational, the Ra Chamber of Commerce will handle funding, servicing, and maintenance for a period of 15 years, while the Ministry of Health will support the facility with staffing and utilities. Dr. Ratu Atonio emphasized the importance of this partnership, stating, “The Ra Chamber of Commerce will fully fund and maintain the facility for 15 years after it opens, showing the strength of community partnership.”
The completion of the mortuary is expected by February 2026, which will significantly bolster Ra’s preparedness for emergencies and enable families to bid farewell to their loved ones in dignified surroundings. Minister Ratu Atonio reassured Parliament that this project goes beyond just infrastructure; it represents a meaningful commitment to restoring dignity, easing hardships, and honoring the lives of the people of Ra during their most vulnerable times.
