With an accessible admission fee of only $30, Ra Maternity Hospital alleviates the financial stress often faced by families seeking maternity care. It offers a range of services, including gowns, clothing for mothers and newborns, and essential items such as baby wipes, soaps, and diapers, particularly aiding families from remote areas.
Colleen Wilson, the Chief Nursing and Midwifery Officer, spoke about the hospital’s resilience, noting how it has faced and survived numerous challenges, including the catastrophic effects of Severe Tropical Cyclone Winston in 2016. She expressed optimism about the hospital’s potential for future growth, stating, “I believe that we can develop and grow this institution.”
Reflecting on the hospital’s success, former midwife Kinisimere Senikuta shared her observations of a substantial increase in admissions over recent months, with monthly births rising from as low as 10 in previous years to as many as 15 to 20 at times. Relieving charge nurse Isoa Natui attributed the hospital’s achievements to its mission-driven philosophy and robust community support.
