Stride with Strength Walkathon Sparks Disability Inclusion and GBV Awareness in Fiji

QVS Stride with Strength Walkathon Sparks Disability Inclusion and GBV Awareness

Advocate for individuals with disabilities, Nafitalai Uluinakorotabu, proudly celebrated his connection to Queen Victoria School (QVS) during the recent “Stride with Strength” Walkathon. A former student from 2003 to 2005, Uluinakorotabu hailed the initiative as a landmark effort in promoting inclusivity and addressing gender-based violence (GBV).

The walkathon was not only a fundraising event but fostered a sense of unity among families, communities, and supporters of QVS. Uluinakorotabu expressed his pride, stating, “The whole program was a success, and I’m very proud because, as a person with a disability, the QVS Old Boys have come together to fight for inclusion and also fight against GBV. I know this was a fundraising event, but it brought together communities and families from the QVS community.”

The participation of notable figures like Shamima Ali, Coordinator of the Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre, and Sashi Kiran, Minister for Women, underscored the event’s impact, particularly in encouraging male engagement in the fight against GBV. Uluinakorotabu pointed out that QVS stands out as one of the few educational institutions actively advocating for disability inclusion and combating gender-based violence.

He also highlighted the collaboration with various organizations, including the Ministry of Women, the Fiji Women’s Rights Movement (FWRM), and the National Council for Persons with Disabilities. Uluinakorotabu expressed hope that the walkathon will evolve into an annual event, urging Fijians to stay tuned for announcements about next year’s initiative. This event symbolizes community solidarity and support for essential causes, creating a more inclusive society for all.
