Quincy Jones Tribute: A Night of Musical Magic at the 2025 Grammys

At the 2025 Grammy Awards, Quincy Jones received a heartfelt tribute during the in memoriam segment, following his passing last November at the age of 91. The tribute featured performances by renowned artists including Stevie Wonder, Janelle Monáe, Cynthia Erivo, Herbie Hancock, and Lainey Wilson. Will Smith also marked his return to major televised events during the ceremony held at the Crypto.com arena.

Cynthia Erivo honored Jones by performing “Fly Me to the Moon,” a classic popularized by Frank Sinatra and famously arranged by Jones. Her performance was complemented by Hancock’s piano contributions and a full band. Lainey Wilson brought her own flair to the night, covering “Let the Good Times Roll,” with Jacob Collier providing piano accompaniment. Hancock returned to the stage for a memorable collaboration with Wonder, who dazzled the audience with his rendition of “We Are the World.” Janelle Monáe concluded the tribute with an electrifying performance of Michael Jackson’s “Don’t Stop Till You Get Enough,” complete with iconic dance moves.

Raj Kapoor, the executive producer of the Grammys, revealed that the tribute to Jones had been meticulously planned for months, reflecting the extensive love and gratitude the music community holds for him. “We’ve had so many artists that have wanted to participate,” he shared, underscoring the tribute’s anticipated significance.

The Grammy Awards also incorporated a focus on Los Angeles, aiming to spotlight the city positively, especially in light of the challenges faced by the community. Kapoor emphasized the broad economic implications of the show and the vital role it plays for many working in the entertainment sector. “We have a stronger sense of community than we have had for a very long time,” he noted, reflecting optimism amidst challenges.

This memorable tribute not only celebrated the legacy of Quincy Jones but also highlighted the importance of community and resilience in the face of adversity, showcasing how music continues to unite and uplift.
