Queens 10K: A Historic Race Redefining Community Spirit

The Citizens Queens 10K boasts a rich history rooted deeply in the Queens community, dating back to the late 1970s. While the event’s distance and location have evolved over the years, it continues to encapsulate the spirit of Queens, affectionately known as the “World’s Borough.”

Tracing its origins to the College Point Athletic Club, which was established in the early 1960s, the race became a staple of local athletic culture. Leo Nicholas, a prominent figure within the club, was instrumental in organizing road races starting in the 1970s. His efforts led to the inaugural Queens Half Marathon in 1978, which attracted around 400 participants, culminating at MacNeil Park.

As interest in the half marathon surged, the event expanded to include a 5K race in the 1990s, thanks to the support of local businesses like Skaggs-Walsh. By 2010, the Queens Half Marathon relocated to Flushing Meadows Corona Park, further increasing its reach and popularity among runners.

However, the challenges of organizing a 13.1-mile race in a park setting led to the genesis of the 10K race, which debuted in mid-June as a more manageable and exciting alternative. Since its inclusion in the NYRR Five-Borough Series in 2013, the Citizens Queens 10K has flourished, drawing over 12,000 finishers in 2024—its most successful year to date.

A highlight of the event is the free Flushing Meadows Kids Run, designed for youth aged 2 to 18, ensuring that the joy of running is accessible to the younger generation. This year’s Citizens Queens 10K and Flushing Meadows Kids Run will take place on Saturday, June 14, promising a day of fun and camaraderie for all ages amid the vibrant atmosphere of Queens.

With its ongoing commitment to community engagement, both Citizens and the New York Road Runners strive to make a meaningful impact in Queens and throughout New York City. The energy and enthusiasm surrounding the Queens 10K exemplify the enduring spirit of the borough and its residents.
