Queen Victoria School athletics coach Ratu Meli Romuakalou is committed to enhancing the school’s athletics program despite various challenges. After four years at Suva Grammar School, Romuakalou has had to adapt to QVS, where rugby naturally dominates the sports scene.
Romuakalou reflected on the challenges of leaving Suva Grammar, noting it wasn’t an easy choice. However, he was motivated by the potential he observed in QVS athletes, particularly during last year’s Coca-Cola Games, where he witnessed promising talent compete with impressive skill and determination. This experience inspired him to develop a stronger coaching framework at QVS. To achieve this, he has enlisted the expertise of seasoned athletes, including Banuve Tabakaucoro, and is also looking for technical coaches who specialize in the 200 and 400-meter events.
Optimistic about the future of athletics at QVS, Romuakalou believes that there is substantial untapped talent within the student body. With appropriate guidance and support, he envisions the school potentially excelling in athletics. He acknowledged the strong rugby tradition at QVS, recognizing it as a challenge when promoting athletics. However, he remains confident that there are numerous gifted athletes who only require the right resources to reach their potential.
Recently, the QVS inter-house athletics event took place at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva, concluding with Tovata house winning the overall championship. This event not only demonstrates the school’s commitment to nurturing athletic talent but also provides a valuable opportunity for students to showcase their abilities. With dedicated coaches like Romuakalou at the helm, there is a hopeful outlook for the future of athletics at Queen Victoria School.
