Brigham Young University (BYU) quarterback Jake Retzlaff is planning to continue his football journey at Tulane University after leaving BYU earlier this month. This decision follows the resolution of a civil sexual assault lawsuit, which Retzlaff settled in June, allowing him to seek a fresh start.
Reports from ESPN indicate that Retzlaff has verbally committed to Tulane after the university conducted thorough background checks, including a review by its Title IX office. He is expected to enroll as a walk-on and will have the opportunity to compete for the starting quarterback position.
Retzlaff gained significant recognition last season, leading BYU to an impressive 11-2 record and claiming victory in the Alamo Bowl against Colorado. He was anticipated to play a crucial role in the upcoming season but faced serious allegations that led to disciplinary action from BYU. The lawsuit filed against him, in which the woman accused him of assaulting her in November 2023, sought damages exceeding $300,000. However, court documents revealed that the case was dismissed “upon the merits,” clearing some legal barriers for Retzlaff.
Despite the challenges, this move to Tulane can be seen as a hopeful opportunity for Retzlaff to rebuild his reputation and continue his athletic career on a promising path. As college football sees many players overcoming adversity to find success, Retzlaff’s determination to keep pushing forward may inspire others facing their own challenges.
