QUAD CITIES, Iowa/Ill. – A wintry mix is set to impact the Quad Cities region as several First Alert Days are in effect throughout the week due to strong winds and bursts of snow. Starting Thursday night, accumulating snowfall of 2 to 5 inches is expected, which could make travel hazardous at times.
The snow is anticipated to be sporadic, but it may intensify enough to reduce visibility to below one mile. Although total snow accumulations may not be extreme, the accompanying winds will create driving challenges, particularly on untreated or unplowed roads.
Temperatures will drop from the 30s and 40s in the morning to the 20s by afternoon, with wind chill values plummeting into the single digits. Thursday afternoon into Friday morning will see another First Alert Day as snow accumulates, creating slick travel conditions.
In addition to this winter weather event, an arctic air mass is forecasted to sweep into the area, prompting additional alerts for the weekend. Saturday’s highs are expected to remain in the single digits, with fluffy snow likely to accumulate quickly. As winds pick up Saturday night into Sunday, wind chill readings could plummet to nearly -30º, exacerbating the cold conditions.
The winter season has certainly made its presence felt early this year, and residents are encouraged to stay informed through various platforms, including on-air updates, social media channels, and the QC Weather App, to ensure their safety during these challenging weather conditions.
Stay warm and prepared as the Quad Cities brace for a significant winter weather event.
