QB-turned-TE Eli Stowers Sparks Vanderbilt Ahead of Texas Showdown

Eli Stowers, a former standout quarterback, is making a remarkable impact in college football as a tight end at Vanderbilt University. Once a star player at Denton Guyer High School, Stowers’ transition to this new position has been impressive, marking a significant evolution in his football career.

Three years ago, Stowers faced a turning point as he dealt with the challenges of transitioning from quarterback due to a series of injuries. After a workout arranged by his father, Donald Stowers, he shared his doubts about his future in football. Donald, who previously coached high school football, encouraged his son by emphasizing his physical gifts—standing at 6-foot-4 and weighing 220 pounds, coupled with remarkable speed. He reassured Eli that he could thrive in any position.

Stowers had an illustrious career at Denton Guyer, where he was recognized as a top recruit. He put up impressive statistics, passing for 6,945 yards and rushing for 3,323 yards over three seasons. His talent propelled him to Texas A&M University, where he initially took on the role of quarterback.

However, a series of injuries that required surgeries on his shoulder and knee prompted a reassessment of his role. Initially moved to tight end by the coaching staff at Texas A&M, Stowers struggled to adapt but chose to rigorously pursue development in his new position after transferring to New Mexico State.

The hard work Stowers put into refining his skills has paid off handsomely at Vanderbilt. In his first season, he caught 36 passes for 366 yards and found the end zone twice, a performance that set the stage for a standout career with the Commodores.

As the 2023 season gets underway, Stowers currently leads the tight end group with 49 receptions and 638 yards, alongside six touchdowns. He has also been recognized with a first-team All-SEC nod and is a semifinalist for the prestigious Mackey Award, showcasing his exceptional contributions on the field.

Looking ahead, Stowers and the Commodores are preparing for a significant matchup against No. 20 Texas this Saturday at DKR-Texas Memorial Stadium, a game that could critically influence the postseason outlook for both teams. Reflecting on his journey, Stowers remarked, “It’s a blessing. I really look forward to this opportunity,” highlighting his appreciation for his growth and accomplishments as he continues to flourish in his new role. Stowers’ inspiring transformation from a struggling quarterback to a promising star tight end serves as a compelling narrative in the world of college football.
