Savenaca Qabale is on the verge of realizing his lifelong aspiration to wear the Flying Fijians jersey, marking a pivotal moment in his burgeoning rugby career. Hailing from Macuata, Qabale has been nurturing this dream since playing kaji rugby, and his recent selection for the Fiji Schoolboys under-18 rugby team for the second time brings him one step closer to achieving it. While aware of the challenges that lie ahead, Qabale remains determined to pursue his goals.
Reflecting on his rugby journey, Qabale conveys his gratitude for the opportunities he’s received. “Ever since I started playing competitive rugby when I was under-nine, I always wanted to play for Fiji. I just thank God for giving me the talent to be able to pursue rugby,” he shares. His involvement with Queen Victoria School’s under-18 team in the Vodafone Deans Trophy competition, since Year 9, has been instrumental in his development as a player.
Qabale’s path has been shaped by obstacles, including moments of self-doubt, yet he credits his family’s unwavering support for helping him persevere. The Fiji Schoolboys’ upcoming tour in Australia presents Qabale and his teammates with a significant opportunity to showcase their skills on an international stage, further fostering their rugby ambitions.
The journey of Qabale echoes the stories of other young Fijian athletes, such as Rafaele Tuikitai Waqalala, who recently joined the Fijian Drua Academy. These narratives encapsulate a widespread dream among Fijian youth to represent their nation on the highest platforms. They underscore the value of hard work, dedication, and the essential role of community and family support in attaining one’s ambitions.
Qabale and his contemporaries exemplify the promise held by Fiji’s young athletes. Their passion and determination for rugby are not only inspiring but also a testament to the vibrant spirit and promising future of the sport in Fiji.
