Residents of Tavua are advocating for the reinstatement of corporal punishment as a disciplinary method, arguing that it could be an effective tool in combating the increasing influence of drugs in their communities. This proposal was brought to light during a public consultation regarding the Counter Narcotics Bill, which took place at Tavualevu Village on February 13. Sanivalati Nasau, representing Nabuna Village, formally requested the reintroduction of corporal punishment in schools, villages, and families.

Nasau argued that reinstating corporal punishment could empower authority figures, particularly teachers, to manage discipline effectively amidst rising drug-related issues. His perspective resonates with a growing sentiment among certain community members who view this approach as a viable solution to their concerns.

Biu Matavou, a member of the consultation team, acknowledged that this viewpoint isn’t unique to Tavua, as similar opinions have emerged in various regions across the country during past public consultations organized by governmental bodies. Matavou noted that the subcommittee for education has also encountered calls for incorporating corporal punishment into the Education Act.

The topic of corporal punishment remains contentious and is heavily debated at the national level. However, the consultation team clarified that this recommendation is being evaluated with a focus on drug prevention measures. They emphasized that any suggestion regarding corporal punishment would aim to target individuals caught with drugs, illustrating a more focused approach rather than advocating for a broad application of the method.

This ongoing discourse underlines the community’s desire for effective solutions to address the drug crisis, emphasizing their wish for a safer environment for youth. The continued dialogue among residents, authorities, and educational institutions offers hope for thoughtful considerations and potentially impactful policies to curb drug challenges not only in Tavua but in wider regions as well.
