Puget Sound Weather: Winds Ease as Rain and Snow Loom

SEATTLE – A recent windstorm on Saturday night has left tens of thousands in the Puget Sound area without power. Fortunately, conditions are improving as winds begin to subside across Seattle and surrounding regions on Sunday. While heavy rain is expected throughout the day, snow may create challenges for drivers on Stevens and White Passes.

On Sunday, Seattle will experience a breezy day with intermittent heavy rainfall. Along Snoqualmie Pass, a mix of rain and snow is anticipated, although road conditions should primarily remain wet and slippery. For Stevens and White Passes, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect until 11 p.m. tonight, indicating potential snow accumulation and resulting impacts.

Reports from Saturday night indicated wind gusts reaching up to 50 mph in some areas, particularly as a result of a compact and powerful low-pressure system. This system tracked farther south than initially predicted, affecting regions like Hoquiam and the South Sound more significantly than anticipated. The intensity of the winds was compounded by the immediate high pressure developing behind the low-pressure system.

Although the winds have calmed down considerably, the ongoing heavy rain may still pose a risk of localized street flooding. As the day progresses, Seattle’s weather is expected to remain cool, damp, and mostly cloudy, with fewer showers projected for Monday.
