A charming pug named Vito recently captured the top prize at the 2024 National Dog Show, an annual event that aired following the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade on November 28. Vito’s handler, Michael Scott from Chesapeake City, Maryland, and the beloved dog appeared on TODAY the following day to discuss their triumph, joined by David Frei, the long-time host of the show.
David Frei remarked on Vito’s standout qualities during the competition, noting his engaging personality and affectionate demeanor. He humorously referred to Vito as having the “perfect pug mug,” highlighting the dog’s endearing features and vibrant attitude.
Vito resides with his owner, Carolyn Koch, in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Michael Scott expressed the thrill of Vito’s victory, stating that it was an unexpected yet delightful outcome, and he celebrated the achievement by indulging in his favorite food.

The National Dog Show, hosted by the Kennel Club of Philadelphia, took place at the Greater Philadelphia Expo Center in Oaks, Pennsylvania, featuring around 2,000 dogs from 205 different breeds. The format included selecting winners from seven groups, leading to Vito’s crowning as Best in Show, earning him a prestigious red, white, and blue ribbon along with a monetary prize of $20,000.
In addition to Vito’s victory, the Reserve Best in Show award went to Verde, a Welsh Terrier. Other group winners this year included a Clumber Spaniel named Houston, a Giant Schnauzer named Monty, an Ibizan Hound named The Zit, a Berger Picard named Rupert, and a Lhasa Apso named JJ.
