Pug Perfection: Vito Takes the Crown at 2024 National Dog Show!

A charming pug named Vito took home the prestigious title at the 2024 National Dog Show, winning the hearts of viewers and judges alike. The competition aired on November 28, right after the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, showcasing around 2,000 dogs across 205 breeds.

Vito’s handler, Michael Scott from Chesapeake City, Maryland, accompanied him for an interview on TODAY shortly after their victory. David Frei, a well-known host of the event, expressed that Vito’s standout personality and lovable “pug mug” were key to his success. Frei remarked, “He owns the ground he stands over,” highlighting Vito’s confidence and charisma.

Residing in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, Vito celebrated his win by indulging in his favorite food. Scott shared the meticulous preparation that went into getting Vito ready for the competition, emphasizing the importance of a healthy diet and rigorous exercise to keep the pug in top shape.

Vito is a seasoned competitor, currently ranked as the No. 2 toy dog in America. Judge George Milutinovich praised the pug for his compact size, movement, and overall pug characteristics, stating, “Wow. Just wow. Lots of dog in a small package.” To date, Vito boasts an impressive record, with 25 Best in Show titles over approximately 75 all-breed dog shows.

The competition, hosted by the Kennel Club of Philadelphia at the Greater Philadelphia Expo Center, saw Vito named Best in Show among tough contenders. He earned the coveted red, white, and blue ribbon along with a prize of $20,000. The Reserve Best in Show title went to a Welsh Terrier named Verde.

The show equally featured group winners hailing from various breeds including Houston, a Clumber Spaniel from the sporting group, Monty, a Giant Schnauzer from the working group, and Rupert, a Berger Picard from the herding group.

This year’s event was hosted by “Seinfeld” star John O’Hurley alongside NBC Sports analyst Mary Carillo and Frei, who have made significant contributions to the popularity of the National Dog Show.

Vito’s journey is a reminder of the joy and companionship that pets bring to our lives, and his triumphant tale inspires hope for all dog lovers and competitors in future events. As dog shows continue to celebrate the unique qualities of different breeds, they foster a community that appreciates the bond between humans and their furry friends.
