The family of Peni Nabanivalu is grappling with profound grief following his unexpected passing, along with that of his wife, Seini, due to fish poisoning at Namunamu settlement in Mataso, Ra. The couple consumed the eggs of a puffer fish, which are known to be toxic. Their teenage daughter, who also ingested the fish, is currently receiving treatment at Lautoka Aspen Hospital.
In a poignant recount from the Lautoka Hospital mortuary, Mr. Nabanivalu’s elder brother, Waisiki Masirewa, explained how a puffer fish caught from a nearby river was initially intended as food for their dog. Despite not consuming the fish flesh himself, Mr. Nabanivalu unknowingly partook in its poisonous eggs. The family had their meal around 9 PM last Sunday, and by 10 PM, the devastating effects began to manifest with vomiting symptoms. In a desperate rush to the hospital, they arrived too late to save the couple.
Mr. Masirewa expressed the deep pain and void left by the loss of his younger brother, emphasizing the unwavering support and strength Mr. Nabanivalu provided to him throughout their lives. Their plans for burial are set for Friday, as the family navigates the turbulent waters of loss while their daughter remains hospitalized.
This tragic event highlights the dangers associated with consuming certain types of fish, underscoring the need for awareness about food safety, especially in regions where traditional fishing practices are common. The family wishes to raise awareness to prevent similar tragedies from occurring in the future, fostering a hopeful message that careful education can mitigate such risks.
