Governor-elect Jenniffer González Colón has proposed establishing an “energy czar” to assess potential breaches of contract with Luma and to oversee the search for a new operator. She emphasized the need for a reliable energy system, asserting her commitment to improving the grid after she takes office.
In communication with federal authorities, President Joe Biden offered assistance to Puerto Rico to expedite power restoration efforts. The outage prompted several businesses and public facilities to close, while grocery stores and other establishments struggled to operate.
Despite the challenges, some residents adapted, utilizing gas stoves or planning alternative accommodations during the outage. This incident highlights the ongoing issues Puerto Rico faces with its power grid, infrastructure weakened by Hurricane Maria in 2017, and the island’s reliance on generators to stabilize energy supply.
