Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu has raised serious concerns about the ongoing high levels of criminal activity, which are further complicated by limited funding and resources for police operations. At the recent inauguration of the Denarau Police Post in Nadi, he called for a collaborative approach to combating crime, emphasizing the crucial partnership needed among authorities, communities, and the private sector.

Commissioner Tudravu highlighted that although there is an alarming amount of criminal activities, the financial limitations faced by the police impede their effectiveness in addressing these issues. He acknowledged that the government has numerous competing priorities that play a role in how resources are distributed.

He praised Denarau Corporation Ltd for their financial backing in the establishment of the new police post, emphasizing the significant impact of public-private partnerships on enhancing public safety. “It’s not just the police’s responsibility; it’s a joint effort to curb crime in Fiji,” he remarked. This sentiment showcases a progressive shift towards a community-focused approach in policing, where crime prevention is a shared duty rather than solely the police’s responsibility.

Tudravu described the initiative as advantageous for both the community and local businesses, promising a return on investment through improved safety and services. He expressed optimism that similar partnerships could emerge in other areas to strengthen crime prevention initiatives further.

The decision to open a police presence in Denarau was motivated by an increase in criminal and drug-related incidents affecting local businesses. The Commissioner is hopeful that the newly established police post will deter potential criminals from exploiting the island for illegal activities. A dedicated tourist police unit will also operate from this location, providing round-the-clock service intended to bolster security for both residents and visitors. This proactive measure reinforces the commitment to creating safer environments and enhancing community resilience against crime.
