Pu Qalo, a 77-year-old composer, music teacher, and choir conductor affiliated with the Methodist Church, has devoted her life to the art of music since she was just six years old. Her musical journey took off at Nabua Primary School in Suva, where her passion was fostered under the mentorship of her music teacher, Tulia Koroi. Qalo has raised concerns about the correct pronunciation in singing, noting that many contemporary performers often neglect proper articulation. “I always feel sad when I hear it because I am very particular about the pronunciation of words; we need to speak or sing them right,” she expresses. Her commitment to teaching correct articulation across languages, including English and iTaukei, stands at the core of her classes, which cater to both local and international choir members.
