A recent hacking incident involving the PlayStation Network (PSN) has highlighted significant security vulnerabilities that could jeopardize countless accounts. This revelation comes from a journalist at the French publication Numerama, who experienced account breaches despite having two-factor authentication enabled.
Many PlayStation users have encountered hacks, with some successfully reclaiming their accounts while others have lost years of game progress. The journalist’s experience underscores a glaring issue in the recovery process. After his account was compromised, with changes made to his login information and a charge of €9.99 processed by the hacker, the journalist managed to recover his account through a phone call to PSN support. However, the recovery process raised eyebrows: the only information required was his PSN username and a transaction number from an old invoice, regardless of the year of the transaction.
Unfortunately, the journalist’s account was hacked again just an hour after recovery. During the second breach, he attempted to contact the hacker directly through his old PSN account using a newly created one. Surprisingly, the hacker was cooperative and disclosed that they had accessed the account using the transaction number posted on the journalist’s previous article. They also claimed to have developed an application to infiltrate Sony’s servers, although this assertion remains unverified as the promised evidence has yet to appear.
Following the second incident, the journalist reached out to PlayStation Network support again. This time, he was asked for personal information, including his date of birth and original login details. His request is currently pending, with a suspension on the account and an anticipated response time of 5-10 days.
In related news, the PlayStation 5 has emerged as the best-selling gaming hardware in the United States for November 2025, and the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog has added nine new titles as of December 2025. This hacking incident raises crucial questions about PSN’s security measures and the effectiveness of account recovery protocols. Users are encouraged to reflect on these vulnerabilities and consider their account’s safety.
